Seating your reloaded ammo just off the lands of the rifling

I have recently started to use the Hornady seating gauges to seat most of my reloads. However there are times when you can't use the gauge for certain guns... Like the 24V which can't be taken apart easy.. In other words removing the barrel from the action..
has anyone ever used a gauge like this to seat bullets just off the lands of the rifle?

Older reloading books reference to use an unloaded (no powder) unprimed case with bullet.  Bullet is blackened with carbon from a match or lighter and you keep adjusting the bullet down in the die based on  when the lands strike the carbon area of the bullet..

Some books also recommend to take reading using tape on a cleaning rod... One reading and tape on the rod with the breech closed and then one reading and tape on the rod with the bullet (not in the case) in the chamber.  this is kind of equal to what the above post references...
They say this is hard to do by yourself since.. One person has to place the tape while the other holds the bullet in place with a rod held against the bullet in the chambers so it doesn't move.  Anybody  use either of these two methods to seat your bullet just outside of the lands of the rifle?

i use the blackened bullet method.... kinda... i use a neck sized case and when i size it i just barely get it to the point where it will hold the bullet securely, but i can still move it easily with my fingers... before i bother blackening it (or you can use a black sharpie, its easier) i just barley seat the bullet in the case with my fingers and chamber it slowly... letting the rifling seat it the rest of the way... pull it out and measure, repeat a few times to make sure you get the same results... then do it again a couple of times with the bullet blackened... if you are getting the bullet jammed into the lands and it sticks in there when you eject the brass you have the neck sized too much, try it again with a different case.. this will give you the distance from the base of your brass to the start of the rifling... don't forget to back off a bit especially if you are near max loads
