Which hunt has the most potential?
« on: January 17, 2014, 05:18:02 AM »
So I have been calling the same general areas, not the same specific spots, for a while now.

Brush, small fields on the edge of woodlots, etc, mostly at night.  I have yet to see eyes this year.  Obviously doing something wrong, but don't know what.  Also obviously a little frustrated.

I am thinking of changing it up a bit and maybe heading to the "Big Woods" of Sproul or Tiadaughton, (Hunter's Lake areas or White Deer).  There are a lot of tram roads back into those spots where I could park, walk back in a ways and call.  Since I don't really know these areas, it would need to be a day time hunt.

I would welcome any opinions on which of these tactics, (new spots or keep on keepin' on),  has the best potential.  A short sentence on why you feel one way or the other would also help.

Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

I am in no way an expert, actually having the same luck as you, but just because you haven't seen eyes doesn't mean they aren't there.

First question you must ask yourself are the predators present?  Have you done good scouting and found that they may be in the area?  Are you playing the wind and terrain correctly?  Do you use the same routes in and out of the areas?  If you have hunted the place often, they may have become educated to your procedures and know when you are around.  How often do you hunt the same areas?  Maybe you should let it cool down(10 days to 2 weeks).  Don't use the same calls.  Do you use an E-caller or hand calls/mouth calls?  Is your volume, when calling, to loud? How often do you wait between calls?  How long do you stay at a set?  Consider staying longer.  As you can see it can be a number of things and this isn't all of them?  If you know they are present keep on keeping on but also consider looking for new areas.

This is what I like about hunting predators.  Finding out the right combination of tactics to get a hunt to come together, ultimately, successfully (meaning one in the bag).  I have to admit it is a high learning curve, but one that will make you feel good when it all comes together.

Check for sign on your day hunt, If you have sign, try different times of the night.
They have to be there WHEN you're calling.

Thanks guys.

I have tried different times, sounds and such and try to play the wind.

I am hunting almost exclusively public land and although I never see anyone else out, would feel confident saying it gets a lot of pressure, (both predator and other game).

My plan is to try to be stealthier, maybe sit longer and hunt fewer spots, but hunt them better.

Good luck to all.

Try to hook up with another member in your area simply to see how other hunters do things.  We can all learn something from others.

If you don't mind traveling to York,  look me up, I'll hunt with you.

MisterJake is an ambassador to this sport...not enough guys willing to help out others.  If you are in Lehigh County I can take you out.  However, my assessment is the problem is the public land.  I hunted it when I started out and never killed a critter on it...stinks where I am.  Started hunting private and made all the difference.
