22 wmr ammo for coyotes
« on: June 28, 2013, 08:46:19 PM »
what would you choose. I know it really comes down to what shoots good in  your gun. to me the max range would be 100 yards regardles. So might first thoughts would be either a 40 grain hp or the 50 grain federal. The 50 grain might even be good to 130 as it holds energy better. These would be my two weights of preference so what do you guys think? Am I looking past the 30 grain hp for no good reason. those 30 grain cci +v shoot really well in both my guns. as do the Winchester 34 grain hp. I talked to Winchester technical and they even recommended sticking with the 40 grain x bullet for yotes.

I wouldn't trust no .22wmr on a coyote when I get the rare chance to shoot a coyote...if a yote pops out on one of my stands I want him takin a dirt nap in his tracks...I know a guy that shot a yote in fall turkey season with a .17hmr in the ear, dropped him stone dead...I was pretty skeptical but it was the only gun he had in the truck when he showed up to weigh it in at work moments after he shot it...I still wouldn't want anything other than a centerfire one me...

I agree a center fire would be better but I live in a rimfire only area. I know the new 17 is out but to me regardless how fast it is going it is still a 20 or 25 grain bullet which I think is really to light of a bullet. I use my 22 hornet when in centerfire areas.

Based on experience (unfortunately), I would not shoot a Pennsylvania coyote with anything less than a .223 unless limiting myself to brain shots.  Especially at night.

Stay away from the balistic tips.  Other than that choose what shoots well in your gun.  The 17hmr is a very under estamated round.  The 22 hornet fosnt hold a candle to the new 17 wsm or 17 hornet.  Speed kills!

I completely agree with you on  "Speed Kills".  A lot of people like a heavy grain bullet for the big "wallup" on impact.  I think there is a happy medium with a "meduim" grain bullet to get more speed verses a totally light bullet or heavy bullet.

I am going to stay away from all the 30 grain speed loads. Had issues with misfires with the 34 grain win supremes. The 40 grain win x and cci shoot about 1 1/2 100 yard groups. The 50 grain federal shoots the best it shoots dime size 3 shot groups at 100 yards. torn on what to use as the 50 grain is as mentioned bigger but slower. held energy at longer distance is better than the 40 but am concerned if it will even expand at all. I think it is advertized at 1600 ft second. at 100 yards is about 12 inches lower than the 40 grain on the targets. I guess at this point it doesn't matter because I cant find the federals anywhere in the stores.

I prefer the 45 Grain Win Dynacaps! They go deep 6 inches etc! Anchors canines!
Not that I would use it for coyotes!

I'm shooting. 40 gr full metal jackets at them in my area this year....right for the noggin...my 22 mag will reach out ..very accurate out to 110 yards...never nor will. I ever shoot at any farther...looses too much energy...

P53,  Are you carrying the .243 w/55 bt and the 22wmr w/full patch rounds @ the same time?  Dick

27 years ago I killed a fox using reduced load reloaded FMJ 100 grain bullet in a  6MM pump...there was not blow up what so ever.  Then I find out you can't use FMJ bullets to hunt with... So that was the end of that!!!!!

I was talking to a guy at one of the PTA  Trapping rendezvous and he told me in NY he uses FMJ ammo to hunt coyotes and fox...There are death runs.. However this was in the daytime and not at night...I don't need death runs that's for sure...You would have to hunt on dirt farms here in SCPA because you would lose canines even in the day time...

Does anyone know if it is legal to hunt with fmj bullets in PA.  A friend told me they couldn't be used.  I was thinking of trying one in a .223 for fox.

I think it's illegal as well.
