biggest difference between tracks
« on: January 14, 2011, 04:50:49 PM »
Can anyone tell me...Uncle Buck...what the biggest difference between coyote and fox tracks are.  I know I have red fox around here.  Seen lots of em and even shot ones tail off as you all know. ::)  I took pictures back when we had the first snow of tracks, and most of you strongly beleived they were coyote.  I have em again, and they look to damn big to be Fox.  The tracks are in a perfectly strait line.  And are at least 2 1/3-3" from tip of claw mark to rear pad.  Thats a big fox if you ask me.  Is it possible to have one coyote in an area?

I see fox tracks all the time in the yard.  But it seems only once in a while I see these larger tracks thatI swear are coyote.  Like he is just passing thru!

I tried what you said UB about yankin their (coyotes) chain.  Makes sense to me.  Started with about 30 seconds of challenge howl...waited about 5-8 minutes than did pups yelping...waited another 8minutes and did waning jack for about a minute.  Repeated this a couple times. (about 45min) Nothin!

First off...the average fox weighs about 8 pounds...Now you can get a big fox too well up to 17 pounds that for sure...Coyotes in Pa the small ones are about 28 pounds and the larger ones go way past 48 pounds to 50 pounds.. Seems like in the Mosquito Creek hunt coyotes over 48 pounds are the ones that place in 1,2,and 3rd place..

Now the 3 inches could be a big fox or a small coyote.

As far as for calling them in with the scenario you use.. They will come to that calling sequence but they have to be there.. Remember unlike fox who live in that home range.. Coyotes travel great distances.  The day you called it could be they just were not there..What a gift you get when calling fox and the coyotes howl break in the silence.. Ah they are there and if you quit calling fox then and go to the scenario, done right you could get one to come in.. Remember too...Doing just one thing wrong..Like clicking the forearm of your shotgun, coughing etc..Your coyote hunt could be over before it even started it..

Coyote prints are unique.. I like to think of them like a spear head shape... Many times you will see the two front claws in the track too.  Very stream line.  Could be that maybe the 3 inch prints could be that of a large red fox????????????or a small coyote...When I looked at the prints you posted I thought for sure they were coyote..

The bigger ones are definitely 'spear headed' UB.  I think  might camp out tonight on the deck and see what happens.  Its so damn cold out there.  I'll put on the insulated Carharts, charge up the batteries for lights and rough it.  I am pretty good at staying quiet.  I'll be up high to so wind wont be as big an issue.  They are coming through about 25yards from the house.  Maybe I'll get lucky and lightning will strike.

Hey....I know a guy that gets a lawn chair covers himself with blankets and hunts the kill pile at a chicken farm...He's killed coyotes doing this too... So...Yep you could get one like this and feel mighty proud doing it too...Throw all kind of dead chickens in your backyard just off your deck.. Your wife will think your cool too doing this!!Don't tell her I told you to do this... ;D ;D

Make your wife real happy tell her you need to by a trail cam so you can see when they come through your yard and feed... Actually sounds like the ideal set up... All those critters on your private property.. Probably you could put a trail cam right on your house or deck and see everything and see what time they are feeding there too.. Never thought much about trailcams then until a few days ago. However you could use them to see when critters are feeding in your areas... Posted that on another post.. Freddy McKnight suggested that in an article...maybe you could buy a cheap one or a good used one from someone..

I had bought a Primos trail cam this past fall.  Hated it.  Returned it once for replacement and than returned it out right.  Thing just never did what it's suppose to.  To dark, or over exposed or just plain didn't work.  Dint think I'll ever waste money on it again.  It's a shame.
I know people swear by em, I just didnt have any luck.
