Sighting in your scope

I always boresight my guns and shoot them in at the 25 yard range first. Then walk the bullet down to the bulls eye. Then go to the 100 yard range and shoot it in to where I want it to hit... Dead center, 1 or 2 inches high etc.   Most of my rifles are mounted on high mount not that lowest standard scope mounts.  I need the height because of the Encore hammer.  I refuse to put on a hammer spur to pull back on. I use the actual hammer...Recently I shot in a scope on a rifle using a standard mount.. Notice after bore sighting the rifle hit dead on right off at 25 yards.   After using the bore sight on the high mounts of course it just common sense that the zero on the 25 range is going to be way high of the bullseye... Maybe something like 12 inches above the bulls eye... Then I have to walk it down which takes extra ammo... Probably best thing for me to do is not set the reticule dead center with the bore sight but turn the recticle down a few clicks so it will not hit more near center..Bore sight it to be a bit below the intersection of lines on the bore sight..


There is another way of shooting your gun in at the 25 yard range.. You put the gun in a good shooting rest.. Fire a shot. Then with the scope recticle aim right dead center of the bulls eye. You adjust the L to R and the U to D recticle right on the bullet hole. Remember not to move the gun from the rest where it sets aimed at the bulleye.. Anyone ever sight their rifles in this way?...Scope on the bulls eye and then adjust the recticle where the bullet hole appears on the target?

No, I think staring at 25 yards with a rifle is just wasting ammo.  But to each his own. I dont bore site either.  I mount the scope tight and use loc tite on the screws.  I may or may not point a laser through the bore on the wall and adjust the scope till I see laser in reticle crosshairs.  Than go to 100 yards right away zero. 2-4 shots is normally all it takes to get good 1/2" group.  Than ready to hunt.

I remove the bolt out of my gun and look down the bore to the target.  Center the target in the bore and then adjust my scope to the bull.  Then shoot at 25yds.  Adjust till it is hitting 1 in low on the 25 yd target then shoot at 100yds.  Normally just a bit hi with my .223
