Red Fox following Coyote
« on: July 24, 2009, 02:24:43 PM »
As I was hog hunting with Foxpro51 yesterday, we spotted a coyote come out of the woods and threw a fiead at 1000 yards out. The coyote dropped down into a small patch of trees and then showed itself in another field at 900 yards out. We had been doing some shooting before this happened. About 20 minutes later we spotted a Red Fox come out of the same trail as the coyote. It followed close to the same path as the coyote until it stopped to sniff around where we had been shooting. My question is, I've always been told that you won't see a red fox in the same area as a coyote. So, what was the fox doing and what was the coyote doing coming out at 5 pm on a clear day? Is it possible the coyote recognized the shooting with an easy meal? Was the fox following the coyote to eat the scraps the coyote left behind? Any thoughts on this?

I'll bet they both came to the sound of the shot and thud, for a meal of dead groundhog

Or maybe the pair didn't want to be caught by their mates cheating.  Hence the 5min difference.

IMO, coincidence.
You probably found a good crossing that is used by all K9s.

The "won't see a red fox in the same area as a coyote"  is a myth.
I've caught a coyote one night, remade the set with the same trap and had a red fox the next night.

That's why I would like to sit down and talk with a Coyote or Fox for an hour or two.

Am with Trap'nJohn.
I have trapped Fox/Coyote doubles. By that, a Fox 5' from a Coyote and both in traps.
Reds or Greys and Coyote. Coon and Coyote. Skunk and Coyote. Cat and Coyote. I only caught one Coyote triple ...Grey Fox and 2 Coyote in a 5' triangle.
What the heck happened here? Who was here first? Geez..Some things leave you scratch'n your head.

i would like to ask a yote how well he can see those red head lens.

in just a few months we will all be scratchin our heads again.
