17 Hornet for Coyotes
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:18:24 PM »
Just bought a new 17 Hornet and man what a tack driver!!!  ;)  But the question is will it be enough for Coyotes???  I shot a 50lb. dog this year and wonder if this 25gr pill is enough to put them down??? And how about pelt damage on fox???  Hope someone out there has some input. Thanks 17 Hornet

I shot a coyote with a 17 hornet right in the boiler maker.  It spun around and ran off.  I never did find that dod.  I also shot one in the head and it went right down.   My personal recommendation is take head shots.

I've had some that I hit in the shoulder that I could stick my hand in but if you stay away from the shoulder you should be fine. I'm shooting the 20 grains they also make a 15.5 gr.

17 Hornet on fox.. If you hit them in them square in the body or in the chest no problem.  If you hit them (anything)  low on the chest it's going to rip.     I know of a person who use to visit here that was using the  17 WSMRF for coyotes... He shot one dead center in the chest with a  20 grainer and it ran about  5 yards..  He shot one in the shoulder and it ran  500 yards before it dropped... The coyote ran across a dirt field that the only reason they found the coyote...   Yes.. I would shoot for the head and the good thing about the  17 Hornet ... They are so accurate that you can do this out past  100 yards..

Are you getting exit wounds?

Some exit wounds.   When they exit it usually leaves a pretty good size hole.

The 17hornet will certainly stop a coyote using factory ammo. The frontal chest shot will drop them on the spot.Factory ammo seems to be a little hard on fox but a milder load around 3200 fps. works very well.
