Items needed for call making?

What kind of tools are needed to make hand calls? I would like to have some fun trying to make them.

I was thinking about a lathe but didn't know how you guys get the fancy laminated grain woods. As far as hand tools, what kind of cutting tools would you recommend?

I have made a couple using Tim's stuff 
primarily a drill press, small benchtop lathe (and tools), sand paper, steel wool, and if you want a shiny finish, some form of clear finish product.

Woods, I went to Woodcraft store and bought a couple pieces (you can go high end, or low end) I liked purpleheart(takes a good bit of sanding to get out the fisheyes) and like Osage Orange.
IMO Hardwoods make nice calls, but are difficult to get a smooth clean look (takes a lot of sanding and time)

Its all in what you want to do. I priced it to buy the equipment to just make them for fun, I was looking at around $600 without the wood.

I started trying to make some a while ago. I got a lathe and a drill press and all the stuff to go with them. Thats the most expensive part. The other little stuff is minor expenses. I have been practicing making the barrels of the calls for a while and i think that is the most fun part of makin a predator call. As far as wood...i knew someone that was knocking down an old barn near where i live this summer. They were just burning everything and i ask if i could take some. They were more than happy togive it to me cuz it was less they had to deal with. I look three full size pickup loads of dry seasoned 100+ yr old oak and other hardwood beams and boards. That gave me enough wood to keep me makin calls for a very very very long time. I have just been running it through a table saw and cutting it down to the size i need.
