Scope Questions
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:26:17 PM »
Bought a new rifle now looking for optics. What does everyone think about the coyote special scopes by nikon? For night hunting should i use a thicker cross hair for a reticle? Also does a 50mm scope allow more light in the scope and make it brighter for night hunting. I like the nikon scopes, they are the clearest out of all the scopes i have tried.

I also forgot to ask what power you think is good for pa. I was thinking either a 3-9 or a 4-12 variable power.

The 50mm will gather more light and you will be able to use a higher power at night.  I would get the lowest power variable scope you can.  The lower the power the brighter it will be.  But 3x9 or 4-12 should be fine.  I have a 6x24 and it can be hard to see clearly because of the 6 power.

And I will add,  try to find rings that put the bell of your scope as low as possable, but dont let it touch the barrel.

I have a nikon prostaff in 3-9x40 with the bdc ret. honestly i dont like the circles in the coyote scope.  I shoot my gun in a 1in high at 100 yds and that works for me on shots out to 200. Since the coyote ret is designed for use on coyote sized game you need to ask yourself if you really need the ret or not.

I like the Leupold 4.5 x14 power with illuminted reticle. 30mm tube to gather light better at night.
