What is a good bait to use in a box trap for ground hogs?

Sweet peas, green beans, apples, and or lettuce work well. Even Cantelope.

If you're using a wire trap. Make sure you cover the bottom with dirt or grass, as their feet will know the difference.

They get a bit smart in developments too.. Need to place a tarp or something from the hole to the trap..Make them think that is still a part of their hole when they emerge...The smart ones will not go into the box trap if it's just placed by the hole.. So with the extension to the trap they come out go right into the trap and are caught..
