mountain tops or bottoms
« on: October 02, 2009, 06:17:17 PM »
Witch do you like the best and why. mountain tops or bottoms. I like to hunt the mountain tops the best. After christmas and deer season is over you pretty much have it to yourself. I have done fair on coyotes on the top. Not as well on the bottoms. Day light till noon has worked for me. Have a good , safe season   Dave

i think it depends of the time of year. most prey species are in the low lying areas(bottoms) during cold temps and winter weather so i would imagine the predators will be there too hunting them. i would think fall would be best for hunting the tops.

I learned to hunt predator just like I hunt turkey. I try to get higher or level with them before calling. I hunt the tops of foot hills.

Mid way for me. Predators like to hunt just as we do. They like to come down on there pray not up. There will also be more rodents and rabbits at the bottom.

Just like that Song:  "I Can See 1000 Miles!"

Once the leaves fall....From November all the way into April...You can see them before they see you...Strategy...you can get the jump on them...Your high, there low better chance they will not smell.....Sometimes????

Problem is getting to the mountain top you have to walk through the low lands below to get there.......Because the PGC closes the gates.......See .....That why I want them to leave the gates open.

There are no swamps on top of the mountains.   Predators are in the swamps. many times the swamps start right at the base of the mountain....

High or low doesn't matter to me.  I want to be near the edges of the thick stuff.

Uncle Buck -- I can show you alot of swamps on top of mountains.  Where there is swamps there is fur.

I had a guy that wanted to come up and go cat hunting.  The first place I took him was one of the higher points in my county and its big woods to boot.  I think it was in January and the guy thought I was nuts.  Sure nuff, get to the top and found cat and coyote tracks.  I don't know if he would be willing to make the climb again, but its definately worth it.

If I had my choice, I'd hunt bottoms and riverine systems in the late season, but theres fur on top too.............

Renny I probably should have posted that there are not many swamps on tops of mountains in areas that I hunt in SCPA.  I do agree with you that I have seen swamps on tops of mountains in many other parts of the state....The Red Rock mountain area of the state why in an elevated area is a good example..Why that has even Beaver ponds on it too....
Your also correct if you know just where the swamps are you can do well calling.. Swamps no matter where they are hold predators since the prey animals are also there.
One needs to know how to approach these swamp areas...In my case down here in SCPA most are at the base of the mountains then at the tops. The Laurel Lake area of Cumberland County has some nice watershed and swamps on top of the mountains in that area of SCPA. This is where predator hunters should be scouting and looking for scat and predator sign...Watersheds,streams, rivers  and swamps no matter where they may be in the state...
