 OK, i just got home from yote hunting pretty fraustrated I went to a spot that 'looked good' some boggy bottoms and thickets there before Never coyote hunted it so i tried dry calling I got nothing to lose and i tried a howl from my new johnny stewart dog howler (best 6 bucks iv spent in my eyes) the very first  howl i made in the  first set I got a major respones it sounded like about 5 coyotes and a older male Once they stoped a minute later i challenged howled them and it was non stop back and forth for around 5 10 mins and they was close!! I heard something behind me it was a dam rabbit When I scanned my p.o.s light back over towards where they was acoss my shooting lane I saw one bolt go across and it was gone. so i did a little ki yi and howld again and the same bunch was going off again, with the gun in my hand and light in the other Night hunting by myself is a PAIN!! So if anyone not seeing any and want to join me in Washington Co. near florence comon down I really could use a hand getting a coyote under my belt and plenty to go around. I heard another pack just down the road from where i started. Now I read somewhere they dont pack this time of year well could have fooled me tonight.

HEY LUNCHBOX IF YOUR GOING TO HUNT BY YOURSELF YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY IT DURING THE DAY.  SCOUT AROUND A LITTLE AND FIND A GOOD SPOT WHERE YOU CAN SEE AND THE WIND IS RIGHT.  IVE HUNTED THEM ALOT AT NIGHT BY MYSELF AND ITS JUST ONE MORE ADVANTAGE THEY HAVE ON YOU.  I FOUND DAY CALLING IS MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN YOURE ALONE.  IF YOU CAN GET CLOSE TO WHERE THEY ARE YOU CAN CALL THEM IN. DONT OVER CALL, BE PATIENT, AND DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY SMART ENOUGH.  IVE HAD THEM HOWL IN PACK PRETTY MUCH ALL YEAR, MOSTLY AT NIGHT.  THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS TO GET OUT AND DO IT.  GOOD LUCK, DONT MISS.

Iv done day calling mainly this was my 2nd time night calling and iv been having better luck at night it seems so far lol

MAYBE TRY GOING OUT AT NIGHT JUST TO LOCATE THEM.  AT LEAST YOULL HAVE A GENERAL IDEA WHERE THEY ARE.  IF YOU KNOW THE AREA GO BACK IN THE MORNING AND TRY CALLING.  IVE NIGHT HUNTED FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.  IVE KILLED LOTS OF FOXES AT NIGHT.  COYOTES ARE A DIFFERENT STORY.  IVE CALLED QUITE A FEW IN AT NIGHT BUT NEVER HAD MUCH LUCK AT GETTING A SHOT.  I THINK THE LESS OPPORTUNITIES YOU GIVE THEM TO CATCH YOU THE BETTER OFF YOU ARE.  IF THEY ARE CLOSE YOU CAN CALL THEM IN DURING THE DAY.

You're right Ed. Last night I had them come up behind me again. I was by myself. By the time I realized they were there they beat feet out of there. It takes two to do it at night with any success. I found the open sight shotgun,with a dim headlamp works best hunting alone at nights.I adjust it down the barrel,and scan looking down the barrel with the gun shouldered and ready to shoot.
That way ol mr yote ends up right in the spotlight.
When the light hits them,they dont have alot of time to fool the hunter as the bead is already on them.And not alot of equipment to take hunting alone.
Dont got to worry about banging your gun,etc.
One light does it all.
Doing it this way is enjoyable sometimes,you dont have to carry a million things and it makes it easier to get through the woods,etc.

Next time they answer you and don't come in..Go to the coyote pup. 

Also you need to hunt with two..One person doing the calling upwind and the shooter 100 yards down wind of the caller but 30 yards cross wind for the actual shooting set up. 

When hunting alone and using mouth calls they are getting in line with you and busting you.  Many times all the howling and yipping is just that...You have been busted....

There is just so much you have to do...Sorry to say that it's almost like a football team having a perfect day...That what you have to do. Set up perfect, hope you did not spook them when you walked in. Hope they show themselves before they get down wind of your calling positon.

If you want to use mouth calls.  You need a shooter down wind and then cross wind of your position to get a shot at them..  When they start howling and do a no show...Go to the coyote pup all the time....Kind of makes them vunerable to that sound....
