Where are they?

The season was going great until the new year rolled in, now for the last 3 weeks I have only seen 2 fox!
I know January is mateing season for the fox and by this point in the season numbers of critters running around are down, but its like they have completely disappeared from almost all the places i hunt. Has anyone else been experiencing this as well?
The rut will turn a nocturnal buck into a day walker so is it simply that the fox are most active during the daytime when temps are highest and they are looking for some of what Mrs. Fox has to offer?

I can't answer your question, but I know what you mean. it is frustrating. Some nights we won't see a thing.

But with that being said, Saturday evening was one of the best fox nights I had so far, activity wise.
We did 7 sets. Called 5 fox and 1 farm cat.

bowman, we've had this conversation..... the places I hunt I know for a fact those suckers are there. last fresh snow there were tracks everywhere. (pairs). I'm gonna try to change things up a bit since they don't seem to be on foot much at night. gonna start hunting the late afternoon and evening with the shotgun, call and decoy in the brushy areas. Ill let you know if it makes any difference.

HD I was trying to see if some of the ole timers could give US a little insight or just there opinion. Being stuck at work all day doesnt afford me to much day time calling but my guess is it would pay off?

I was a bit surprised to have that good of a night, to be honest.
The only thing I have changed is to start right at dark. Earlier in the season, I usually waited a while after dark to start, in hopes that human activity would calm down some.
