VarmintZapper....welcome aboard.

try this.
go back to this spot before sun up and let out a lone howl or two and wait for a response. if you get one....reply in a challenge and if you get one back reply back to the coyote with another challenge exactly what you heard coming from him. than just sit tight.

all your doing is letting them know your in their area....and that your an outsider by you challenging them not once but twice. hopefully this will be enough to piss them off and come out of that wood patch and expose themselves for a shot.

another good call that might actually work better is a puppy ki-yi. thier instincts will hopefully be to come see why there is aother coyote in pain.

if your not sure how to do howls/ki-yi's......download some into your MP3 player and keep the call next to you so you can work the buttons.
next time when your calling think less is best...sounds like those coyotes have heard this tune before. get them curious to check you out.
good luck.

sorry i couldn't get to your post at the other site...been kinda busy. you planning on joining up? we'd like to have you along with us. wouldn't be too hard to hook up with a member and learn how to do these calls with a hand/mouth call rather than an e-caller.

Woody thanks for the reply.
I did see your response on the other site.
Thanks again. I'll start searching for the sounds you suggested.
Our next trip up to the camp will be the second weekend in OCT.
I just re-mixed the calls on the player. Here the list as I set it up
A1                      1-min-silence.mp3
A1.5 challenge 1.00 sec .mp3
A2 Coyote Locator 3.06 sec .mp3
A2.5 Cottontail Distress 3.01 sec .mp3
A2.75              1-min-silence.mp3
A3 Coyote Pack Howling 3.00 sec .mp3
A3.5  highpitch 1.03 sec .mp3
A3.75              1-min-silence.mp3
A4 wileyoneh 1.01 sec .mp3
A4.5 Coyote Challenge .06 sec .mp3
A4.75              1-min-silence.mp3
A5 Cottontail Distress Young .30 sec  .mp3
A6 challenge 1.00 sec .mp3
A6.5 Cottontail Distress 3.01 sec .mp3

I can plug in the pup sounds at any location in the list.
Most of these are from the Western Rivers site.
Where would you suggest they be placed.

it looks to me as though you may be calling too much. the point i was getting at in my original post was to tone down your calling. you know where they are....they hear you calling....but your not making them curious enough to come check you out...or not pissing them off enough to come check you out.

they may be on to you...i donno. they need somthing to commit....a stranger in their turf...an injured pack member....or a decoy for that matter.

next time.....just let out a lone howl....if you don't get a response just site tight for about 5mins....than do a rabbit distress series. if you do get a response....you can reply back...but i think now that maybe just being quiet and sitting tight might be better. hopefully their curiousity will get the better of them.

it's hard to sit tight and be quiet....i have a hard time doing it myself when i know that a coyote is being vocal with me.

do you own any hand/mouth calls? or a howler?

Good advice. Personally, I'd put about 20 minutes between the 1st howl and distress. Might I add calling from a different location next time. The coyotes may not have liked where you were(past bad experience or outside their home turf, etc.) I'd try setting up right where you think they were last time.  As far as you playback list goes, you don't want it set in stone like that. You lose the ability to adapt to the circumstances that are unfolding.

I agree, to much calling and too many coyote sounds.  Start off with some mouse squeeks next time your up, just in case they are close and you don't realize it.  I take it you were sitting together.  Maybe one of you should get down wind of the caller 50 to 75 yards.  Good luck and be safe........Tim
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!

Thanks to all for the advice. I'll pull some of the sounds out of the player.
and add more blank space between them as suggested.

I do have an assortment of calls and a howler that I can chime in with. I've tried them in the past couple of years without any response. I put in a lot of emotion and try to make them sound like something is getting killed. One is a squeaker sound that is a higher pitch. I'll start out with
that one.

I just wish the camp was close enough to go more often. It's 285 miles and 5 1/2 hrs to get there. There a lot of places to try all over the northern tier.

We do have Coyotes over here in NJ, but they only have a limited season them. If you see one while deer hunting you can take it, but tha actual season starts in mid Jan until mid Feb. Just like everything else in this state, thats another permit to buy.

There is some good advice given above people over call when they are calling coyotes.  You have to get into their brain and play with it.  Do a lone howl wait  8 minutes do a rabbit distress wait 8 minutes do a KIYI wait 8 minutes.

Also BP recommendation might work too.  if the wind was just right your shooter could skoot down and be waiting were they hung up before.  The caller would be way up were you called before.  You don't want your scent blowing down into the woods were they hung up.  Now as far as the shooter who knows which way they may come into that area from.  Maybe the shooter should get up in a tree stand  before it gets dark.
