17 Hornet Factory rounds or 17 Hornet Brass
« on: August 15, 2013, 01:28:55 PM »
I paid  $19.99 for  25 17 Hornet factory  25 grain VMAX.  Notice that  50 reloading  brass for the 17 Hornet cost $28.99.   You can get already loaded ammo 25 grain VMAX for $19.99 divided by 25 = $.80 each for reloaded ammo  or $28.99 divided by 50 = $.58 each for brass.  I suppose  $.22 adds up after awhile if you just buy factory ammo to just get the brass..Besides I want to reload the brass with some of the MidwayUSA Dogdown  .172 20 grain HP.  All those  additional  $ .22 each for the factory ammo I could buy bullets for the brass.  Another thing you have to take into consideration is right now you can get factory ammo but you can't find the brass.  The only option for now would be to go with the  17 Hornet factory ammo just to get the brass!!! HA just me rattling and thinking here...You  know me just trying to get you to think about things you normally don't think about!!!   ;)

Sir this is the second time I have read one of your posts that mention factory 25 gr V-MAX for the 17 Hornet. Where are you finding these? I only see factory loads of 20 gr V-Max and 15.5 gr NTX. I would love to have factory loaded 25 gr to try.

Dan oops! Your tight and I'm wrong! The factory 17 Hornet is a 20 grain VMAX! I'm getting mixed up with the 17 WSMRF which is a 25 grain Polymer tip.  Sorry for making you think there is yet another 17 Hornet  ammo configuration! I guess for now only a reloader can take the Hornady  25 Grain VMAX  bullet and reload it in 17 Hornet brass!

No worries..."wrong" is a harsh word....just a simple mistake. But I was really day-dreaming about a heavier factory load!...I have confidence in the round for fox at distances I shoot (especially at night) just from the performance I have seen on the G'Hog kills. But for yotes or even a cat I am not too sure if I would take a shot over 75yds with the 17 Hornet. That's just me. I have not seen enough animals harvested with it yet.

I'd really love to see how the Hornady XTP bullet would perform in the 17 Hornet.

I think the 15.5 NTX rounds are being focused in the "lead free" states.

I may need to get back into reloading....if not just for the 17 Hornet alone. Would love to try out the 25 gr HP.
