any advice on how to get these coyotes tonight?
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:40:52 PM »
About 745 this morning, my aunt called and said there were a pack of coyotes howling and yipping in a relatively small chunk of woods by her house. Now assuming they were gonna stay denned to in that woods all day, what time this evening should I try calling them out to the field? Don't wanna go to early but I need to get setup before they leave that area right?

Id start calling the last hour of daylight and again an hour or two after dark if there is no response the first time

Well I won't be home until 530 so I guess ill get there as soon as I can. Should I start with a pup howl or two, then get into the distress sounds?

I'd start with a soft prey distress then louder. Then a medium pitched howl and let that stew for about a half hour or so

+ 1 what Leglifter said.  They may not even be there now.  It's possible they were moving thru the area when she heard them.  Good luck.  I hope you get them.
"Predators are either active & feeding, semi-active & callable, or utterly inactive & then practically speaking, no call is needed; we're just taking our guns for a walk. We can & should get used to it, & follow their leed cuz they just ain't eager nor apt to follow our’s any time soon!

Well it surrounds cut corn and spy bean fields, and the back side of the woods is an open cemetery and highway, I'm certain they are close. Hopefully I can get one, or at least get them talkin.

No luck, at all, in 4 hours... Tonight seemed so perfect no wind no moon, and no red glowing eyes! Not a single fox either. Ahhhhh what dry spell.

I hear ya. I've been in a dry spell as well since deer season. No coons, a couple fox but no shots and coyotes with the wrong caliber gun on me. It's been tough.
