Rate you're calling success based on Private or Public land
« on: November 17, 2010, 07:27:15 AM »
I see 21 people responded so far to the recent poll.  Seems most hunt on Private.  This is what I suspected.  When calling on Private do you tend to have more success calling in you're quarry vs calling on Public land?

When hunting public land, you never can be sure when someone else may have been their before you, calling and/or educating the quarry.  Just like deer and other game, you often dont see anything when you are looking for it, but at night they are all grazing on private un-hunted property.  The ONE time I called in a coyote at night, it was on public land, but in the summer where I am guessing no-one hunts.  After that, I never saw or heard the coyotes again.

Sometimes I also think the people who do barely anything right are just lucky and maybe that is the tactic??

Example: person who smokes a cigarrette while on deer stand, no cover scent, normal cloths no camo, pissing off his deer stand, eats a smelly Italian hoagie for lunch, gets a deer every year.  Where the guy who works at it, wears the right clothes, keeps the clothes and boots in a bag till he is at his parking spot, uses cover scent, is aware of the wind, is quiet, doesnt eat anything in the bush is lucky to see anything.  Let alone trying to call in a smart, wiley predator.  This is why I think I am done with public land.  Seems like a waste of time.  Too much Pressure on the animals.

One of my best spots is public land but it is an exception to the rule.  don't pass up all public lands, sometimes you have to change your methods for educated critters.

I usually hunt private land at night so that I don't have to deal with people bothering me or my truck at night.  Daylight sets are often on public ground though.  As far as call/kill ratios, I do not see much of a difference.

I do quite well calling public lands.....However.....This happens after all of the deer seasons are over... Also at night time too.. Remember things like this:  Once the canines start to mate they start to move.....So all of those private lands that are along the PGL or State Forest they now visit there.. Actually even areas that you would think have been hit hard... Once the Horns......happen......That natural urge for both female and male canines to populate makes them increase their home range.....

Also....this also applies to lands that you have permission to hunt on what farms near by that you don't have permission to hunt on. When that mating urges hits they all start to move beyond their home boundries...

As a predator caller...Learn what sounds work best this time of the year...Say...Mid Jan until the end of the fox season..

Would you say that at this time the challenge howls would be good to use?  In the past month or so, when I have heard coyotes, it has only been a challenge howl that I have heard.

The Challenge Howl is only for the top dog...You can use it anytime in the hunting season... Some think that if you use this to early in your calling sequence that you will scare all younger coyotes away.  I too believe this.. I do use it in my calling sequence but only after being on stand 35 minutes...Prior to that I will use Interrogation Howl,  KIYI, food distress sound,  puppy whines,  high pitched howls.

You could use it right off if you know the Alpha Male or Alpha Female is there....If your just calling coyotes.. Use it all year round but only at the end of your calling sequence...
