Whens a great time to go waterfowl hunting?

I have been thinking about learning more about ducks n geese. Its one of the few types of hunting I have never done. And lately it has been appealing to me more and more.

anyone have some good tips?

For geese...do you find fields better than near a water source?

It would seem pretty difficult to identify the type of duck it is while its flying in....

Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated......after seeing tons of pics and stories...it seems like a blast    ;D
THIS IS SPARTA!!

Go hunt on the east shore MD. in January. You will limit out on ducks and geese. I have an outfitter that is $125.00 per day. Outstanding outfitter and friend. Tons of fun. IF you need outfitters number email me.

Never really got into hunting geese only, but have shot them while duck hunting over the years.  lots of ways to hunt ducks,  early in the season the smaller ducks are around, woodducks mostly, if you go watch a pond or river during the evening you will see where they want to land, set up in that area in the morning and you will have some good pass shooting, no need for decoys just take a call with you (mallard or woodduck)  when you see them just give a couple of calls and wait.   pass shooting woodducks can be a humbling experince, they are fast.  another way to get them is to walk a slow moving creek, you will find them in the pools, they are much easier to jump shoot.

later in the year, late November or December we hunt the bigger ducks, (blacks, mallards).  we use decoys and call them at that time of the year,  they are tough to call sometimes educated ones will make 4 or 5 circles to check out your spread.   decoy shapes this time of year should be in a C or a Raft.   i do better with the Raft set up that time of the year.  30 to 40 decoys.

once you get into it, ducks are easy to identify.  i only shoot winchester steel shot.  #4 mostly.

Whens a great time to go waterfowl hunting?....When they are in season!!! I like early mornings at first light...but late evenings aren't bad either...within shooting hours

anyone have some good tips?...yep, get permission and buy plenty of ammo..seriously now, hook-up with someone who hunts them regularly..they can show you alot in a short time.

For geese...do you find fields better than near a water source? Depends on where they are feeding or loafing...Don't mean to be smart but you hafta spend time in the field patterning their activities

It would seem pretty difficult to identify the type of duck it is while its flying in.... It takes time afield to know them and how each species flys

and finally...Yep it's a blast!!
