Title: what shotgun do you use.
Post by: scott on October 06, 2009, 07:01:04 AM
i have always used my Browing BPS pump for nighttime hunting. Not sure i like the pump gun for night hunting.  this year i am going to use a stoeger side by side to simplify things.  i like the fact of loading and unloading with a break open shotgun,  easier and quiet, i also like having 2 different shells to choose from with 2 different chokes.

what shotgun do you use and why?

a mossberg bolt action,

because it shoots good,i've taken many turkey, etc, with it.
and i like bolt actions
it is only a 3 inch mag but has the choke tubes, and is drilled and taped for scope mounts

Mossberg 500 pump action. I use it because it's an all purpose gun. It's tough enough that I don't have to worry about hunting in bad weather and the price tag is nice to. Plus it comes with a camo finish so I don't have the rust that blued guns do. Interchangable chokes and reasonably priced barrels. What's not to love?

my main shotgun is a mossberg 500 with red dot.  I also use a berretta semi whenever I feel like it.  depends.  I would like to get a short barreled double.  I think stoger makes one called the condor.  looks like it could be a pretty nice gun.

If i used a shotgun it would be my Benelli shotgun with full choke tubes .

i bought a stoeger uplander side by side with double trigger, was looking at the condor but ended up buying the side by side, always wanted one for some reason.

the only thing I am worried with on the condor is I did not see anyway to attach a red dot or scope.  maybe there is a way?  hmmm.

i think it would be tough.

all the fox ive shot in the woods, which come in alot easier,or more of them are usualy moving so quick i dont see how you can get the red dot on them,i hunted with 2 different guys that had them, and they both couldnt get on some foxes my 15 year old nephew could have killed.

When your calling in a woods with a headlamp on,and a flourecent bead,on the front.

if you turn your headlamp slightly, you can scan your area back and forth looking right down the barrel, which there is no transition time where with the red dot, there is alot of wasted time, plus if the animal turns without the red dot you can still make the shot as you can see the animal well.

not so with a red dot..

the benelli's are sweet,i will have one,my daughter graduates from college this coming summer, and it will be affordable, but the gun i have now suites me fine.

I never had an issue getting on a fox with a red dot.  I am talking about a red dot that has no magnification.  only thing different is you can see it better then a bead that is not lighted.  all I know is it works for me.  I know the issue I had with using a regular shotgun bead was not getting my head down on the stock right and would often times shoot over.  I think it is ub that allways says about aiming lower then normal while using a shotgun.  this is because many times people do not get their head down on the gun right and shoot over.  practice helps too.  heck I even used my predator shogun while hunting in the d4 crow hunt this spring and it worked just fine.  keep both eyes open helps alot also.  can you post a pic of the illuminated bead you use TO?

it came factory on my gun it is green, but my headlamp on low lights up the whole barrel..its like one big picture when it comes in,but you are right you gotta shoot lowit looks different at nigt, ive had some come through awful fast, but i hunt pole timber woods, and thickets.and you dont see them till there right on you.

but when i see the eye my bead is already on them and my cheek is against the rest

now that i thing about it,i dont think these fellows were keeping both eyes open, but its relaxing with a shotgun and no scope as you know unless you smacked it off something hard its shooting the same place.
thats just my preference though.

Guys they sell a little lighted  bead that stick on barrel of a shotgun. It cost about $2.00 and stays light for a long time. I got mine at Harbor Freight. This also works good for fishing at night.

I use a Mossberg 535 with a thumbhole stock and a red dot scope (non magnifying)
Also attached a tactical shotgun light w/ red lens on the underside for night hunting.

i know UB has had some issues with the Holo sight and missing some shots because the fox come in to fast,  i use a orange mangnet fiberoptic sight with the headlamp turned on my head so when i put the gun up the animal stays in the light.

if the light is too bright you can use a black magic marker on the end and it will dull it down, just use a light coat.

I use my T/C Encore w/12ga barrel with a red dot on top.  It's a single shot but deadly accurate.  It can take 3"mags.

I do have a Mossberg 835 on hold at the gun shop I deal with.  That gun will be used for everything from deer to turkey.  But mostly water fowl.

A break open shotgun is a safe one to use when your hunting with other people....Side by side is an excellent shotgun to use for gray fox...Or if the caller sends you down wind of his calling about 100 yards the side by side or even the single shot is an outstanding shotgun to use.
I suggest a battery or a manual bobber 3 inch light stick on the side by side to have something to point below the fox eyes.. Notice I said below...Your right many of us when we aim the BB right at the eyes we shoot over the fox... Optical illusion out there at night time.
The semi or pump  would be excellent during twilight conditons over snow...A red takes off then you can take three quick shots if need be.  I have taken reds on the third shot under these conditons already...Missed with shots 1 and 2 and flipped them on the third shot.
Most times on dark nights thats all your going to get anyway is one shot....

Stoegers nice side by side...You shoot  one barrel and open the action to place a new shell in the safety goes on...I like that... Plus you can change the tubes out to accomadate different conditons...Suggest you contact Carlston and get an cylinder choke for the Stoeger side by side... Nice to use this shotgun for rabbits and grouse in real thick stuff with the cylinder tube for your right barrel...

Love the Holosight if I see a fox coming into my calling from afar...Hate it when they run right at you out of no where. Some times we try to go to high tech and we end up shooting ourselves in the foot.

I suppose if I practice practice practice practice at night time using the Holosight and perform some snap shooting my kills would improve on reds that are on top of you within seconds....

Problems with many of us is that we do jump around to so many different shot guns and that can hurt you......

I use a Mossberg 535 w/ non-mag 50mm recticle red dot, and have a primos 100yd scope light mounted under the gun on the barrel.  as far as shells, i use the winchester copper plated #4 buck for both fox and coyote.

Remington 11-87 Super Mag.  It is the DU edition so already camoed and use the fiber optic sights on it.  Was thinking about one of those red dots as this is also my turkey gun.  Guess i gotta get out and try a few first

Going   back to basics this year...Not even going to use the Holosight....Had to many fox last year that came to my calls but came in so fast that I did not even get a chance to shoot...Lighting up the raybar front sight with a Truglo archery light......Making it simple....

Years back Dennis Kirk use to sale a illuminated front bead sight that you attach near the shotgun bead....Worked outstanding but you can't get them anymore...He use to say...."Red On Red Your Dead!"  The Red bead on the red eyes of the fox...It's just that simple.....

Ah nothing like a side by side Dreamcatcher.....I have a Stoeger 410 Coach Gun...Real nice rabbit gun!!!!!!Choke are fixed unlike yours.. IC and M...Would be great to use with a Beagle or in thick  cover.  Carlston sale all kind of choke tubes for the Stoegers...Like a cylinder choke tube...Wow you can screw in a cylinder tube and keep one at full choke ... or use the Open Choke cylinder and modifed for real thick cover... You can also get tubes for steel shot too for your Stoeger....
The Stoeger should work out real nice in thick cover for gray fox too....

Old dependable...Remington 870 Express...tru-glo sights seem to light up well with the head lamp on them...you look slightly gangster with your headlamp cocked sideways  8)...but you're in the woods no one cares...trying out the remington 3" #4 bucks, patterened nice last spring bringin on cardboard about 36 of 44 pellets in a 1 foot square piece...with most centered using a remx-tra full choke at 35 yards

if not using #4 buck...#4 shot in Federal Turkey always has shot well out of my gun...not so much other brands for whatever reason...but as everyone knows...every gun has its own "personality"

after using the new Stoeger sidebyside  a couple of times in the field, i can say that it was the right move for me.   i like the fact that it is easy to load and unload in the dark.   having two triggers is a plus, being able to load the first barrel for fox and the second for coyote or long shots at fox will pay off.  plus the gun seem to just shoulder perfect.

We always told our hunters to bring out the gun they were most familiar with for elk whether it be a 270 or 338 win mag.  It dont matter what ya hit em with if ya cant hit em at all LOL
